GTA 6 on PC: why you'll be waiting, and for how long

No PC version of GTA 6 has been announced. Here's why Rockstar always does this, and what the GTA V and RDR2 track record lets us estimate.

You play on PC, you’ve seen 19 November 2026 everywhere, and you’ve been looking for the line that says “and on PC”. It isn’t there. Here’s the honest answer: no PC version of GTA 6 has been announced, and there are good reasons to think the wait will be measured in years, not weeks.

What’s official, and nothing more

The confirmed scope fits in one sentence: GTA 6 releases on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

And here’s what doesn’t exist as of writing:

  • no PC release date;
  • no PC pre-orders;
  • no system requirements, minimum or recommended;
  • no PC store page, anywhere.

Worth stating plainly, because a vacuum attracts rumours. Every week a “leaked” Steam listing or a spec sheet does the rounds. If it doesn’t come from Rockstar, it’s worth nothing. A game this size doesn’t quietly appear on PC: the day it happens, it’ll be announced, dated, and impossible to miss.

Why Rockstar ships on console first

It isn’t contempt for PC players, and it isn’t an accident. Three structural reasons show up every generation.

1. A console is one machine

A PS5 is one CPU, one GPU, one memory budget, one SSD. An optimisation team knows exactly what it’s targeting and can squeeze out the last frame on hardware that won’t change for five years.

PC is the opposite: thousands of combinations of processors, graphics cards, drivers, operating systems and display setups. For an open world of this scale, the port is a project in its own right — graphics options, upscaling, VRAM management, ultrawide support, mouse and keyboard, peripherals. That doesn’t get done “as well”, it gets done afterwards.

2. Piracy and leaks

A PC build puts the game’s binary in everyone’s hands. Datamining, unannounced content spoiled, online cheating, illegal copies. Delaying PC gives the publisher a multi-month window where the game lives on closed platforms, with security handled by the hardware maker.

3. Two sales waves instead of one

The least glamorous reason and probably the most decisive. A separate PC launch is a second marketing campaign, a second wave of press coverage, a second wave of purchases — often from players who already bought it on console. A single simultaneous launch collapses all of that into one weekend.

The track record, in numbers

This is the only serious basis for estimating anything. Rockstar’s behaviour has been remarkably consistent:

GameConsole releasePC releaseGap
GTA VSeptember 2013April 2015~18 months
Red Dead Redemption 2October 2018November 2019~13 months

Two data points, one trend: somewhere between one year and eighteen months. And the gap narrowed between the two, which is mildly encouraging.

The estimate: late 2027 to mid-2028

Apply that range naively to 19 November 2026:

  • with the RDR2 gap (~13 months): late 2027;
  • with the GTA V gap (~18 months): mid-2028.

So: late 2027 at the earliest, mid-2028 in the long scenario. To be completely clear — this is an estimate, not information. It rests on exactly two precedents. Rockstar can move faster, slower, or do something entirely different. Nobody outside the company knows the date, and anyone quoting one confidently is making it up.

What is solid is the order of magnitude: we’re talking years, not months. If your plan was “I’ll wait until December 2026”, the plan needs redoing.

The only signals that will matter

When a PC version genuinely approaches, you’ll know from concrete signs rather than rumours:

  1. an official Rockstar announcement;
  2. a PC store page appearing;
  3. published system requirements;
  4. pre-orders opening.

Until at least one of those four exists, nothing has changed. No need to refresh Steam every week.

What about mods? What about FiveM?

Fair question if you come from modded multiplayer, and the answer follows directly from the above. FiveM only works with GTA V on PC. No PC version of GTA 6 means no FiveM on GTA 6, mechanically. The modded server timeline is therefore bolted to the PC port timeline, plus however long it takes to rebuild an entire ecosystem on a new engine. We went through that in FiveM and GTA 6: what we know.

The other common worry: will GTA 6 kill what exists today? We answer that properly in will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 launches?, but the short version is no — nothing of the sort has been announced.

In the meantime, there’s better to do than wait

That’s the actual point of this article. You’ve got at least a year, realistically closer to two, before GTA 6 boots on your machine. You can spend that refreshing forums, or you can spend it playing.

Because the PC version of GTA V has existed since 2015, goes on sale constantly, runs on almost anything, and remains the only place modded multiplayer genuinely exists. If you’re still on the fence, we did the maths in should you still buy GTA 5 in 2026?. And if the game is already in your library, installing FiveM for GTA 5 Enhanced takes about twenty minutes.

That’s exactly why we built Chased now, on GTA 5 Enhanced through FiveM, instead of waiting on a hypothetical GTA 6 PC build. The format: 1v1 duels, one hunter against one hunted, with a shared car drawn at random — both players get the same model, nobody buys an advantage, zero pay-to-win. All that’s left is driving. And it’s playable tonight, on the PC you already own, without waiting for 2028.
